Cannabis: The Next Big Leap in Medical Science

The question of usage of cannabis for medicinal purposes is the hottest topic right now in the field of medicine. Supporters say it is appropriate to use the pain-relieving qualities of cannabis to the patients who suffer from pain due to treatments like chemotherapy to help them to cope with their pain, any path to help them feel better is right. The opponents say that it is a sin to consider cannabis even as an option for medicine. Cannabis is highly addictive and the patients may end up being its addicts, which may cause further complications in their health. Is cannabis really the next big leap in medical science?

Does Cannabis have medicinal qualities?

Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years by numerous cultures. Some variants like the big bud marijuana seeds have much medicinal value. Studies show that cannabis can reduce vomiting and nausea in people who are undergoing chemotherapy, increase appetite in patients suffering from HIV/AIDS and decrease muscle spasms and chronic pain. In short, it helps to make life easier for those people suffering from painful illnesses.

The extracts of cannabis, tetrahydro cannabidiol, and cannabidiol, to mention the important ones, are known to treat many other conditions like peripheral neuropathy, few neurological problems like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and movement problems and also some psychological problems like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

What then, is the problem in prescribing it?

When anyone names cannabis or marijuana, the first thought that comes to mind is that it is used by drug addicts to evade reality. This common perception is one of the major issues. It leads to various ethical and moral dilemmas that stop the patients from using and the doctors from prescribing it to their patients even in places where it is legal to do so.

Another argument that the opponents use is that though cannabis is more effective than some conventional antiemetics, components of cannabis often induce certain side effects like dizziness, hallucinations, and dysphoria. If cannabis is used for a long time, it may result in cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Chronic cannabis use may lead to cannabis dependence syndromes like bronchitis and adverse effects on attention and memory.

Such facts and speculations are stopping the doctors from prescribing cannabis and the lawmakers from legalizing medicinal use.

What are the patients doing to get rid of their pain?

Patients suffering from chronic pain and unfavorable conditions as a result of their treatments are often dependent on the medications which are free from the useful components of cannabis. This just treats their symptoms partially whereas there are higher success rates while using cannabis medications. So, such people either go to countries where it is legal to use cannabis for medicinal purposes or those who cannot afford to go to other countries resort to illegal drugs to get rid of their pain.

Not just humans, but animals too are being benefited from the medical miracles of this herb. A lot of pet owners have started using cannabis products like CBD dog treats, CBD supplements, CBD oil, etc. which tends to be really helpful in treating pain and various other diseases like diarrhea, tremors, seizures, tics, stress and even cancer. You can also pair up cannabis with your regular anabolic steroid dosage. This won’t have any negative effect at all.

What do the laws say about this?

In the United States alone, there had been wide differences of opinion about the legalization of marijuana use for medicinal purposes. At present, as many as thirty states along with Washington, DC, allow prescription of marijuana for medical purposes by marijuana doctors. But their approaches differ widely. While some states allow both dispensaries for medical marijuana and home cultivation, some other allow either of these. There are a few states where medical marijuana is decriminalized, but there is no clear law to regulate its use.

For example, Florida allows both medical marijuana dispensaries and home cultivation. Some other states prohibit either of the two. You can obtain a license from the Government on the prescription of marijuana doctors and can grow marijuana in your home for medical treatment. You can also buy cannabis and related products from medical marijuana dispensaries as well as an online dispensary.

Coming out of the Dilemma

Governments have to rely on data from the studies to come to a conclusion on the laws in this issue. However, the data is limited because of the prohibition of marijuana and its derivatives which hinders research. So, taking careful steps in order to make the optimal use of medicinal qualities and enacting proper laws in order to prevent the misuse of marijuana gets critical. This will definitely make marijuana a big leap in medical science.
